Math

How to Play "Twenty Questions"
This is a mental math game using the format of "twenty questions" to provide children with opportunities to think about equivalence; each uses coins totalling 50 cents (or another value). Place the coins in your closed palm without allowing children to identify them. Announce the total value of coins in your hand. Have your child ask questions that can be answered only by yes or no, such as "Do you have a quarter?" or "Do you have two dimes?"

Record the question and answers on a piece of scrap paper as you proceed. Keep track of the number of questions it takes to determine the exact coins you're holding. As you progress, notice if your child is beginning to ask questions based on anticipating equivalence; for example, if the target is 50 cents and pennies and nickels have been ruled out, only two possibilities exist: two quarters or five dimes. Have your child share the thinking underlying their questions.
